MechSE research professor Predrag S. Hrnjak was recently awarded the Institute of Refrigeration J&E Hall Gold Medal for the most noteworthy contribution to the advancement of refrigeration.

The Institute of Refrigeration (IOR) was founded in 1899 as the Cold Storage and Ice Association, and was the first national society of mechanical refrigeration in the world; the present name of the Institute of Refrigeration was adopted in 1944. It is an independent organization run by refrigeration and air conditioning professionals to promote the technical advancement of refrigeration in all its applications, to promote communication between professionals and an exchange of their expertise and views, and to encourage invention and research in all matters relating to the science and practice of refrigeration.

The IOR’s J&E Hall Gold Medal is a world-recognized award for an individual’s contribution to the development of refrigeration and air conditioning technology.

Hrnjak has been a member of the MechSE faculty since 1993. Before he came to UIUC, he was an associate professor of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Belgrade. It was from the University of Belgrade that he received his Dipl. Ing. (1976), master’s (1984), and D. Sci (1992) in Mechanical Engineering. He is also the co-director of the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Center (ACRC) at UIUC, as well as a director for the Air Conditioning Systems Lab, Mobile Air Conditioning Lab, and Pulse Modulation control lab.

Hrnjak is a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR), and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He is also an ASHRAE Fellow.
