Getting Started With MakerWorks
MechSE MakerWorks consists of three makerspaces affiliated with the Mechanical Science and Engineering department: Jackson Innovation Studio (JIS), Wood Maker Studio (WMS), and the Metal Maker Studio (MMS). JIS and WMS are undergraduate-run by the MechSE MakerWorks Club, whereas the MMS is staffed by machinists.
Whether you're a student working on a personal or class project, an RSO member laser cutting keychains, or a graduate student 3D printing prototypes for research, there is a space for your creativity and innovation at MakerWorks. Please see the following pages depending on what services you're looking to use at MakerWorks! Ensure that you have read through each webpage below, as there are limitations on who is eligible to use studio offerings depending on the space.
- Jackson Innovation Studio: FDM 3D Printing, Laser Cutting, and the Storeroom
- Wood Maker Studio: Wood Working
- Metal Maker Studio: Machining
All MakerWorks spaces are located in the basement of the Sidney Lu Mechanical Engineering Building. The Jackson Innovation Studio is Room 0100; go down the stairwell by the Starbucks/main elevator on the first floor of the building! Wood Maker Studio (Room 0055) and Metal Maker Studio (Room 0045) are down the hall from the Innovation Studio.
The Jackson Innovation Studio and the Wood Maker Studio are not open when class is not instruction (including holidays during the semester) or during the weekend. The Innovation Studio and Wood Maker Studio have limited hours of operation during the first few weeks of the semester, and the last day of operation for Fall 2025 will be Friday, Dec. 12th at 7 p.m. Metal Maker Studio has different operational hours. Scroll down for specific hours for each makerspace!
