Biography

Moshe Matalon is the Grainger College of Engineering Caterpillar Distinguished Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, in the department of Mechanical Science and Engineering. He received his B.S. in Applied Mathematics and Physics from Tel Aviv University in 1969, an M.S. degree (magna cum laude) in Engineering Sciences from Tel Aviv University in 1973 and a Ph.D. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Cornell University in 1977. He began his academic career as Assistant Professor in the Aerodynamics Laboratories of the Polytechnic Institute of New York University in 1978, then joined the department of Engineering Sciences and Applied Mathematics in the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science at Northwestern University in 1980, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1985 and Full Professor in 1991. Since 2007, he has been the Grainger College of Engineering Caterpillar Distinguished Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

His research interests are in Combustion Theory, Theoretical Fluid Mechanics and Applied Mathematics. In combustion, he made outstanding and innovative contributions to a wide range of topics including the structure, dynamics and stability of premixed and diffusion flames in laminar and turbulent environments, flame stabilization and edge flames, combustion at the microscale and combustion of heterogeneous fuels. Matalon was recipient of several awards including the distinguished Ya. B. Zeldovich Gold Medal of the Combustion Institute in 2020, the Numa Manson Medal of the Institute for Dynamics of Explosions and Reactive Systems in 2017, the Fluid Dynamics Award from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 2016, and the Pendray Aerospace Literature Award from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 2010. He was elected Fellow (inaugural class) of the Combustion Institute in 2018, Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) in 2012, Fellow of the Institute of Physics (IOP) in 1999 and Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) in 1995.

Matalon serves as Editor-in-Chief of Combustion Theory and Modelling since 2001, and was on the editorial board of the journal since its inception in 1997. He was also Associate Editor of the Journal of Fluid Mechanics from 2008 - 2019, and served on the Editorial Board of Progress in Energy and Combustion Science from 2004 - 2015.
