MechSE professor Sameh Tawfick was named one of this year’s recipients of The Grainger College of Engineering Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research. He won in the associate professor category.
The award honors faculty who have demonstrated an outstanding record of research achievements and publications during the past five academic years (2016-17 to 2021-22).
Tawfick was recognized for his leadership in the field of manufacturing and applied mechanics. Since coming to Illinois, he has pursued interesting ideas at the interface of engineering science and more applied topics. In his Kinetic Materials Research Group, Tawfick has made tremendous contributions in metamaterials, additive manufacturing, the science of graphene synthesis, the mechanics of twisted and braided structures, design of artificial muscles, and other topics.
Tawfick was one of three from MechSE to win the Dean’s Award this year; assistant Professors Katie Matlack and Mattia Gazzola were also recipients. He will be formally recognized at the college’s Faculty Awards Ceremony on April 24.
