A short film developed by Rachel Berry, MechSE's Creative Video Producer, won a second-place prize in the 2024 Illinois Brand Contest from the university's Office of Strategic Marketing and Communications.
The film features an innovative solution developed by teams of Senior Capstone Design (ME 470) students over the course of several semesters. Through a project sponsored by a medical student in the Carle Illinois College of Medicine, the students were challenged to come up with an improved scalp-cooling device used by cancer patients going through chemotherapy, a treatment process that commonly results in hair loss. The resulting innovation, called CAPSLocksTM, could be a game-changer for many cancer patients.
The written story and film were featured in the Summer 2024 issue of MechSE Magazine as part of a story on the importance of human-centered design in engineering.
