Huseyin SehitogluProfessor Huseyin Sehitoglu has been invited to serve on the Board of Governors of the most influential journal in the field of materials science and mechanics.

Acta Materialia, a journal from Elsevier, publishes original papers that advance the in-depth understanding of the relationship between the processing, the structure and the properties of inorganic materials. The governing board oversees four journals: Acta Materialia, Acta Biomaterialia, Scripta Materialia and Materialia. It also administers several awards, including the prestigious Acta Gold Medal, given annually.

The field of materials science of metals and ceramics is evolving rapidly, and the Acta journals have published some of the key papers in the field in recent years, including first principle calculations of metals and ceramics, strength and toughness of high entropy alloys, metallic glasses, and advanced experimental techniques including high energy diffraction. The journal continues to cover key areas such as strength, fatigue, fracture, environment effects, and creep of materials relevant to a broad range of applications.

Sehitoglu has contributed to many of these fields over the years and published extensively in both Acta and Scripta Materialia. His current research is focused on slip deformation in titanium, the understanding of hysteresis in shape memory alloys, the short range ordering effects on strength and fatigue in high entropy alloys, and internal stresses in nitrogen vacancy point defects in silicon carbide.

Sehitoglu will serve a four-year term beginning January 1, 2024. This marks the first time a faculty from UIUC has been invited to serve on the board.
