Detailed Course Description

Introduction to the behavior of composite materials and their use in engineering structures: behavior and properties of the constituent fibers and matrices, micromechanical predictions of composite properties, anisotropic elasticity, behavior of composite laminae, and classical lamination theory; fracture mechanisms, failure theories; behavior of composite plates and beams. Same as AE 428. Prerequisite: TAM 324/CEE 300 or ME 330. 3 undergraduate or graduate hours.

Micromechanical behavior and property predictions (10 hr)
Anisotropic elasticity (6 hr)
Classical lamination theory (11 hr)
Failure theories (5 hr)
Behavior of composite beams and plates (5 hr)
Special topics (e.g. computer project) (2 hr)

ME: MechSE or technical elective.
