Detailed Course Description
Design problems and projects intended to accompany TAM 251. Primarily for Engineering Mechanics majors. Other students meeting the prerequisites may enroll with consent of instructor. Prerequisite: Credit or concurrent registration in TAM 251; sophomore standing in Engineering Mechanics. 1 undergraduate hour.
Topics:
1. Introduction to design. Definition of design, design models, examples drawn from statics, dynamics, and strength of materials.
2. Selected design problems. Open-ended problems using solid mechanics.
3. Design project. Team-oriented experience including problem statement, constraints, manufacturability, cost considerations, alternative solutions, final report and oral presentation.
