Detailed Course Description
Solution of compressible flow problems by one-dimensional techniques, both steady and unsteady; flows with smooth and abrupt area change with friction, with heat addition, and with mass addition; flows with weak and strong waves, multiple confined streams, and shock waves. Prerequisite: ME 300 and ME 310, or either AE 311 or TAM 335. 4 undergraduate hours or 4 graduate hours.
TOPICS:
1. Review of basic fluid dynamic and thermodynamic principles
2. One-dimensional wave motion, normal shock waves
3. Governing equations for generalized one-dimensional flow
4. Isentropic flow with area change
5. Applications of isentropic flow and normal shock waves
6. Flow with friction (Fanno flow)
7. Flow with heat addition (Rayleigh flow)
8. Generalized one-dimensional flow
9. Oblique shock waves
10. Prandtl-Meyer expansions and applications
ME: MechSE or technical elective.
EM: Possible secondary field, with approval.
