On March 6, students in this semester’s ME370 course (Mechanical Design I) presented a mid-semester showcase of their projects in progress. They exhibited kinetic sculptures designed to mark the passage of time. During the second half of the semester, course instructors Professors Gaurav Bahl and Arend van der Zande will assist the students in integrating their sculptures with mechanical escapement clocks.

“The first part of the project – what we did today – is focused on being a designer,” said van der Zande. “The second part is focusing on being an engineer. We made this project very open-ended, so as long as there’s some element of mechanical design in it, what we wanted students to do was explore their creativity and their options. We saw lots of different examples of various kinds of mechanisms and different ways of moving, and for me that was very exciting.”
