University of Illinois Ranked Near the Top of World’s Best Universities in Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is ranked third in engineering/technology and computer sciences in the latest Academic Ranking of World Universities, which was compiled and published by researchers in the Graduate School of Education at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. It was released in November at an international education conference in Shanghai. This is the seventh annual ranking by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Over a 1,000 schools were evaluated. This is the seventh annual ranking by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Over a 1,000 schools were evaluated. Some of the criteria used to evaluate the schools were

  • number of major awards, including Nobel prizes, won by alumni and staff
  • percentage of publications by researchers which appear in top journals such as Science and Nature
  • number of researchers widely cited in their fields
  • number of articles recorded in major citation indexes of academic publications
  • engineering research expenditure
