Professor D. Scott Stewart has been awarded a National Academies Fellowship, Senior Research Award. The National Academies includes the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council, which is administering Professor Stewart's fellowship in conjunction with the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. The internationally competitive Research Associateship Program provides opportunities for highly qualified scientists and engineers to work on research programs of their choice in federal laboratories. Professor Stewart will pursue research at the Air Force Research Laboratory/Munitions Directorate at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, in collaboration with Dr. Yasuyuki Horie. In his study, he will investigate issues of complexity related to the ignition of energetic materials, with a focus on mechanisms and collective behaviors of reactive sites at the microscale, and will develop a basis for new sub-models for explosive particle interactions.
