Assistant Professor Chenhui Shao was a recipient of this year’s SME Barbara M. Fossum Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award.

Shao was one of 14 engineers, age 35 or younger, recognized for their exceptional contributions and accomplishments in the manufacturing industry. He was honored with the award at the North American Manufacturing Research Conference (NAMRC) in June in Erie, PA.

Nominees can be selected by the SME’s International Awards and Recognition Committee based on a single outstanding accomplishment, such as technical publications, patents, academic or industry leadership, or for several significant accomplishments in one or more areas of activity.

Shao earned his bachelor’s degree (2009) in automation from the University of Science and Technology of China. He earned master’s degrees in industrial and operations engineering and statistics (2013); and a doctorate in mechanical engineering (2016), all from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He joined MechSE in August 2016.

His research focuses on digital and smart manufacturing, big data analytics in manufacturing, machine learning, high-performance computing, and manufacturing system control and automation. He has earned multiple honors and awards in the last few years, including SME’s 30 Under 30 honoree in 2018; a Best Paper Award from ASME International’s Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference; and Best Applications Paper Award from “IISE Transactions.” Shao was also named a Scholar-in-Residence from the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at Illinois, and had a feature article in “IIE Transactions.” He has also been included on the university’s List of Teachers Ranked as Excellent by Their Students.
