"This award was a complete surprise to me!" Phillips said. "I'm grateful to the many MechSE alumni who ranked me high on their list of influential instructors."

"It's been a pleasure teaching and also working in the Undergraduate Programs Office," continued Phillips, who served as the department’s associate head for undergraduate programs until he retired in 2011. "I have especially enjoyed working with the gifted team of MechSE professionals serving our undergraduate students."

For more than 20 years the MechSE Alumni Board has sponsored two Effective Teaching Awards. The awards were established so that alumni two and five years into their professional careers might have the opportunity to honor faculty members whose teaching they now perceive as having had the greatest impact on their careers.
