Nam recognized with Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research

 

Assistant Professor SungWoo Nam has won a 2017 College of Engineering Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research. The distinction recognizes assistant professors like Nam who have seen exceptional research accomplishments throughout the previous academic year, as well as associate professors for their work over the previous five years. The award will be formally presented at the College of Engineering Faculty Awards Ceremony on April 24.

 

Nam earned his PhD in applied physics in 2011 from Harvard University, and was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Berkeley, before joining MechSE in fall 2012. 

 

His research program at Illinois pursues innovations in controlled deformation (i.e., ‘architecturing’) of atomically-thin, two-dimensional (2D) materials to explore how unique shapes of atomically-thin materials enable new functionalities. In particular, his research group studies mechanical self-assembly of folded and crumpled two-dimensional materials for strain-tolerant and flexible/stretchable forms of sensors for biotic and abiotic investigations.

 

His research efforts have also recently been recognized with an ONR Young Investigator Award, an NSF CAREER Award, an AFOSR Young Investigator Award, and a NASA Early Career Faculty award.
