The International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research (I2CNER) was recently featured in the October 2011 bulletin of the Materials Research Society.
I2CNER is located at Kyushu University in Japan, with a new satellite location at the Urbana-Champaign campus of the University of Illinois. It is one of the newest World Premier International Research Centers (WPIs) to be funded by the Japanese government, in an effort to expand international collaboration in research. I2CNER is the only WPI to be led by a non-Japanese researcher: MechSE professor Petros Sofronis. Their focus is on researching technological developments necessary for a hydrogen-powered society.
The Materials Research Society, founded in 1973, is an organization of materials researchers, both from academia and industry, which encourages communication and technical information exchange within the materials science community. They currently have almost 16,000 active members in the United States and 80 other countries. Their bulletin is published monthly, featuring the latest news and technical developments in advanced materials research.
