A newly endowed award, the Nowick Award honors the late Dr. Arthur Nowick and his lifelong commitment to teaching and mentoring students in materials science. It is presented to a scholar who shows particular promise as a future teacher and mentor.
Leem has also received the 2019 Tomkat Postdoctoral Fellowship at Stanford University and will join Stanford as a postdoctoral fellow in Spring 2020.
The Tomkat is global competition that awards two years of funding to support early-career researchers working on sustainable energy and its intersection with food, water, transportation, human health, and the environment. Leem and three other fellows were selected based on their academic and research excellence along with their potential to inform and advance solutions on critical sustainable energy challenges.
“In her PhD studies, Juyoung has made innovative contributions to the mechanically coupled properties of mixed-dimensional materials,” said MechSE associate professor SungWoo Nam, Leem’s advisor. “She also has been keen on reaching out to broader communities where, in one recent example, she has developed a children's storybook to introduce nanotechnology to K-3 ("Gene the Graphene").
“I am certain she will continue to develop high impact research, share her passion in STEM education, and grow into a leader in her field.”
