The work of MechSE assistant professor Gaurav Bahl has recently been featured in Optics & Photonics News, a publication of the Optical Society (OSA).

The Optical Society was founded in 1916 to increase and diffuse the knowledge of optics, and to support and encourage cooperation among “investigators of optical problems.” It has more than 17,000 members from over 100 countries. Optics & Photonics News is their monthly news magazine offering in-depth coverage of recent development in optics.

Bahl’s research in Brillouin cooling was listed in their feature, “Optics in 2012,” as one of the 30 most important developments in optics in the last 12 months. “Optics in…” is an annual December feature of Optics & Photonics News which highlights the most exciting peer-reviewed optics research over the previous year. Bahl’s work was selected among approximately 80 other projects from scientists all over the world.

Bahl has been a member of the department since August 2012. He received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from McMaster University in Canada, and received his master’s and PhD in electrical engineering from Stanford University. He is also an affiliate of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

He has been a member of OSA since 2010.
