ASME Student Chapter Wins Award

MechSE Students who attended the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Student Professional Development Conference this April in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, returned to Illinois with a $200 award. The University of Illinois' ASME student chapter won second place for being one of the most active student sections in the region.

The Illinois chapter, which has about 100 active members hosts many types of events throughout the year, including professional events such as general meetings, roundtables, professor lunches, EOH projects, an M.E. for Me! conference, a freshmen M.E. for Me! conference, the ASME-AOE Women's Conference, an etiquette dinner, Tech Elect Night, and Peer Advising. The society also hosts many social events, such as intramural sports, broomball, a homecoming float, the bi-annual ASME-ASCE paintball challenge, cookouts, happy hours, and the occasional barcrawl. Each year, several members attend both the ASME Student Professional Development Conference in their region (District C - Midwest), and the ASME National Congress.

The regional conference April 16-18 was attended by MechSE students Gina Zak, Alex Hanson and Jeremy Koch. Zak participated in the Old Guard Oral Competition, which is based on oral presentation skills. She competed against 10 students from other schools, including Purdue University, the Milwaukee School of Engineering, Western Kentucky University, and the University of North Dakota. Her presentation covered "Intelligent Design and Management of Space Heating and Cooling in Buildings."
