The department’s undergraduate programs in mechanical engineering and engineering mechanics have ascended once again in the rankings – moving up five spots – to #4 in the country.
In the U.S. News and World Report’s 2025 college rankings, released today, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign shares its #4 spot with Georgia Institute of Technology, with MIT, Stanford University, and University of California, Berkeley taking the top three spots.
Professor Leonardo Chamorro, MechSE’s new Associate Head for Undergraduate Programs, credits the hard work done over the last few years, and looks forward to more years of future growth.
“Our rise from #9 to #4 in the nation reflects our determined pursuit of excellence here in MechSE. I thank Professor Sinha for his key contributions to this achievement during his recent tenure leading our undergraduate programs, and we now set our sights firmly on reaching the top.”
The Grainger College of Engineering maintained its #5 rank overall across all undergraduate engineering programs. Eleven of its programs continue to be ranked in the top ten.
Earlier this year, USNWR ranked Illinois #7 in graduate programs for mechanical engineering and #3 in ME online graduate education.
“While peer recognition of the quality of our degree programs is gratifying, I draw inspiration from the MechSE faculty who teach with devotion, our staff who serve with professionalism and commitment, our students who work tirelessly, and our alumni who continue to support us,” said Professor Tony Jacobi, MechSE Department Head.
