Ruthie Lubkeman and Samridh Singh have been awarded the MechSE Staff Award for Exemplary Service for 2025. The honor is given annually to up to two staff members for their contributions to the department and their outstanding service to faculty, students, colleagues, and visitors. Nominations are solicited and submitted by MechSE faculty, staff and students.

Lubkeman, who will retire from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign at the end of April after 18 years of service, has spent 17 of those in MechSE. Since joining the department, Lubkeman has exemplified what it means to be an outstanding member of the community. From her post as an Office Manager on the fourth floor of Mechanical Engineering Laboratory, she has served as a vital resource, problem-solver, and morale-booster for faculty, staff, and students.

Lubkeman consistently goes above and beyond her official duties — whether it’s streamlining administrative processes, supporting onboarding, or managing facilities with proactive care and efficiency. What sets her apart, however, is her unwavering commitment to building a sense of community. Her cheerful greetings, thoughtful check-ins, and seasonal decorations make the fourth floor feel like home. For nearly two decades, she has had a lasting impact on department culture.

Singh, a Chief Academic Advisor in the Undergraduate Programs Office, is a tireless advocate for hands-on learning and student development—whether through his advising and instruction of ME 199, ENG 491, or ME 470 SAE, advising student organizations, or simply offering thoughtful, timely support. His impact reaches beyond the department through his involvement in these large-scale interdisciplinary RSOs, where he fosters a welcoming environment in which students feel seen, heard, and empowered to build and grow.

Singh’s approachability, creativity, and commitment have made him a cornerstone of the student experience. He not only enhances the academic and operational efficiency of the department but also elevates its spirit.
