Professor Prashant Mehta.MechSE Professor Prashant Mehta has been named a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

Mehta has made notable contributions to the fields of nonlinear dynamics estimation, optimal mean-field control, machine learning, and symmetry-breaking control systems. He invented the feedback particle filter algorithm, which revolutionized nonlinear filtering and has been incorporated into advanced software for motion sensing.

Mehta also developed a pioneering symmetry-breaking approach to control combustion instabilities, a technique now widely adopted as an industry standard. This solution is extensively utilized in Pratt & Whitney jet engines and afterburners, highlighting its significant impact on aerospace technology and engine performance.

The Fellow grade of membership is conferred on worthy candidates by ASME’s committee of past presidents to recognize their outstanding engineering achievements.
