Lu MEB main hallway. The Sidney Lu Mechanical Engineering Building is open for business.

Almost, at least.

As the Fall 2021 semester begins, Lu MEB builders are 99% done with the massive renovation and addition project. As they complete the final 1%, the doors are open for MechSE students, faculty, and staff to get acquainted with the department’s modern new headquarters and home. There is much to see, from the many gathering areas to the modern classrooms to the incredible MechSE MakerWorks on the lower level, plus an abundance of light flowing in from the oversized windows throughout the building.

Please note that all construction signs are to be strictly adhered to. The east stairway and southeast entrance are off-limits for now, so please enter the building from the Mathews Street entrance.

Classes and labs will be held in the new building as spaces are completed and outfitted for use. The Undergraduate Programs, Graduate Programs, and Business offices will be moved in over the coming days and weeks. Individual faculty and staff members have begun populating their offices. Starbucks has targeted September 29 for its grand opening.

Plenty of gathering spaces in the building are ready for anyone wanting a great spot to study, socialize, or just relax. Damon McFall, Director of Facilities and Operations, encourages MechSE students to explore the building spaces and begin making themselves at home.

“We’re moving into a brand new space that is rapidly becoming a campus destination this fall,” McFall said. “We just started the first class and everyone applauded this cool moment!”

This incredible facility was made possible by alumnus Sidney Lu (BSME '81).
