Mechanical engineering doctoral student Kevin Gim has won a TechnipFMC Fellowship for the 2021-22 academic year. TechnipFMC is a technology provider to the traditional and new energies industry.
Gim’s research, in the lab of ECE Professor Joohyung Kim, focuses on exploring smart robotic mechanisms and systems, specifically for humanoid robots, legged robots, and manipulators. Currently, he is researching a giant biped robot. In order to overcome various challenges in building a large-scale walking robot, the robot adopts a complex linkage structure that will allow it to perform dynamic locomotion.
Gim said he hopes to achieve a stable and successful walking with the giant robot, which involves a lot of research questions and technical work. His long-term research goal is to develop mechanisms that will enable the robots to transcend human locomotion capabilities.
“The TechnipFMC Fellowship means many things to me. I am very grateful that my research objective has been appreciated by the selection committee. It makes me convinced that this work can contribute to industry and society. I am truly thankful that the fellowship allows me to concentrate on my research, alleviates some financial burden, and also gives me inspiration for my research,” Gim said.
Gim earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Yonsei University, South Korea in 2015, and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of California Los Angeles in 2016.
