MechSE Undergraduate Programs Coordinator Missy Biehl was named the 2019 top undergraduate advisor on campus.

The Campus Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising is very competitive—given to only two people each year, one faculty member and one professional academic advisor. Biehl was honored for her impact on the intellectual development of undergraduates, her innovative approach to advising, and her strong history of support of MechSE student life.

Biehl began her advising career in 2012 in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, then joined MechSE in February 2013. She successfully communicates the details of the MechSE curriculum and its requirements and opportunities to a wide range of audiences, including parents, prospective students, current undergrads, and faculty.

In addition to formal advising, Biehl supports MechSE’s student societies throughout the year as well as for Engineering Open House. She also streamlined the department’s student awards process, improving the efficiency of the process by one-third and more effectively identifying award recipients.

Emad Jassim, recent Director of Undergraduate Programs for MechSE, said Biehl has had a major impact on the student success over the years. “Missy is always upbeat, conscientious, and ready to support and motivate students. She knows the names of many of our approximately 1,000 students and helps make the department feel like a home away from home. I often find students who are not her advisees stopping by to share good news with her or coming in discuss problems.”

Biehl will receive the award at the campus' Celebration of Teaching Excellence on April 11.
