Mesoscopic Thermo-Mechanical (MTM) Desalination

Research Goal

The objective is to resolve several critical issues associated with the function of the MTM, which is a low-cost, mass-producible water purifier that uses phase change for separating ions from water. The main theme is to realize the full potential of desalination via freeze-distillation by synthesizing and optimizing the materials that are necessary for the development of a working prototype of a desalination device (MTM). This project focuses on the extraction of the rejected brine, and the development of rotor coatings that permit the control of ice formation and detachment. (NSF CAMPWS)
