Research Goal
In this project, we developed the concept to exploit the mesoscale to purify water and concentrate soluble compounds. The MTM employs freezing, fractionation, and filtering to separate ions and particles from an aqueous solution. Based on a theory developed by John Georgiadis and I, more desalinated water can be generated than the amount frozen, making the MTM very energetically efficient. To date we have demonstrated the fundamental concepts. Two papers describing the fluid dynamics have been published, and another on a vibrating membrane utilized in the process. (DARPA)
