As a sophomore in mechanical engineering, Moises Reyes chose The Grainger College of Engineering “because of the opportunities that come with being a part of an exceptional university. I highly anticipated specific opportunities which the university and program offered such as joining the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, studying abroad, and meeting amazing people from all over the world.”

Even as a freshman, Moises became involved in multiple organizations on campus. He’s a member of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and Volunteer Illini Projects. So far, Moises’ favorite classes have been Chemistry 101 and MEP Mentoring. “I enjoy chemistry lectures because I always leave having learned something incredible and I appreciate MEP Mentoring because of just how welcoming the community is.”

In his free time, Moises, who is from Chicago, loves to go on small adventures with his friends and family. Whether it’s a small trip to the mall or a competition against nature by hiking and canoeing, Moises finds everything exciting. Moises is eager to continue his learning and gain more hands-on experience with mechanical engineering. Although his main interest is in mechanical engineering, he’s also a skilled coder. For the past two summers, Moises has attended the One Summer Chicago Coding Program where he’s been able to develop various iOS apps.

Moises is grateful and honored to be a recipient of the James R. Tucker Scholarship for 2019-20 as well as the Boeing NACME Scholarship during the 2018-19 school year. “Because of this scholarship, I have been able to take advantage of all the opportunities which have come my way. I was able to attend SHPECON this year because I could pay for it thanks to the help of my scholarship.”
