Edgar Mejia, a junior in mechanical engineering, is committed to making a difference in the world. Edgar studied abroad in Stockholm, Sweden, where he learned about engineering’s role in environmental sustainability. He is excited by the opportunities a degree from the College of Engineering will offer.

“I have always been attracted to the development of technology. However, I did not know what type of engineering I was going to do. I picked mechanical engineering because I believe this kind of engineering gives you the opportunity to learn from different areas,” he said.

As an international student—Edgar is a U.S. citizen from Mexico City, Mexico—he loves to travel and has already visited 14 countries! While on campus, he participates as a member of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and works to encourage students from low-income backgrounds to consider engineering as a profession.

He is proud to be a student in MechSE and knows that his dream of an Illinois engineering education is made possible by his scholarship support. He is honored to be a recipient of the 2016-2017 Sargent and Lundy Engineering Scholarship.

“I am really grateful for this kind of support. I can assure you that I will do my best to show my gratitude and eventually give back to the community. I know that someday I will help students like myself who do not have all the resources, but are highly motivated. Money should not be a factor when it comes to education.”
