July 31, 2008 - Predrag HjrnakPredrag Hrnjak, research professor and co-director of the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Center, was one of three individuals to receive a 2008 Rittinger Medal at the May International Energy Agency's Heat Pump Conference in Zurich. The award, named after Peter Ritter von Rittinger, an Austrian engineer who designed and installed the first knonw heat pump in 1855 in Austria, recognizes contributions to international collaboration in advancing heat pump technologies.
July 24, 2008 - Professor Mark ShannonProfessor Mark Shannon's testimony at a recent U.S. House of Representative's Energy and Environment Subcommittee hearing was featured in the July 24 issue of Energy & Environmental Daily, an online subscription publication that is widely read by members of government, environmental groups, corporations and the media.
July 22, 2008 - Professor Iwona Jasiuk and Professor Martin Ostoja-Starzewski delivered keynote presentations at the First American Academy of Mechanics Conference, held in New Orleans in June. Professor Jasiuk's talk was entitled "Bone as a Mechanician's Playground," while Professor Ostoja-Starzewski spoke on "Random Microstructures, Scaling to RVE, and Stochastic Mechanics."
July 20, 2008 - Naira HovakimyanProfessor and Schaller Faculty Scholar Naira Hovakimyan joined MechSE on July 16, 2008. She comes to the department from Virginia Tech, where she was a Professor of Aerospace and Ocean Engineering. Professor Hovakimyan's research is in the area of nonlinear systems and adaptive control with particular emphasis on aerospace systems.
July 20, 2008 - MechSE's Director of Engineering and Technical Services Manager Bob Coverdill (left) shows visiting students equipment from the Ford Rapid Prototyping Laboratory. This July MechSE treated seven students from the Illinois Connections in Engineering (ICE) program to lunch and tours. The students visited the Ford Rapid Prototyping Laboratory in the Mechanical Engineering Laboratory and two instructional labs in Talbot Laboratory.
July 16, 2008 - Stephen PlattResearch Associate Professor Stephen Platt joined MechSE in July 2008. He comes to the department from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he was also a research associate professor. His work focuses on the development of robots for surgery, biomedical sensing and cooperative unmanned air and ground maneuvers.
July 2, 2008 - Professor Mark ShannonProfessor Mark Shannon addressed the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) 2008 Water Sciences Forum, "Cutting-Edge Technologies for Water Services: Applications in Africa," during an invitation-only event held June 27 at the Department of State Building in Washington, D.C.
June 24, 2008 - The Illinois Formula SAE car competes at the Virginia International Raceway.The University of Illinois' Formula SAE Team car finished 10th in the endurance race and placed 13th overall at the International Formula SAE event at Michigan International Speedway.
June 19, 2008 - Professor Clark BullardThe American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) awarded research professor Clark Bullard its 2008 ASHRAE-Alco Medal for Distinguished Public Service, which recognizes outstanding public service that helps to improve the public image of the engineer.
May 29, 2008 - Professor Ning WangA groundbreaking paper by Professor Ning Wang was highlighted in the Editor's Choice section of Science Signaling,the weekly journal by the publishers of Science magazine.
May 27, 2008 - Charles TuckerCharles Tucker, Alexander Rankin Professor of Mechanical Engineering, has been appointed Associate Dean for Academic Programs in the College of Engineering. He replaces Umberto Ravaioli, who served in the position as Interim Dean.Tucker joined the University of Illinois in 1978. He received two- and five-year effective teaching awards from MechSE and the Everitt Award for Teaching Excellence from the College of Engineering.
May 13, 2008 - The American Society of Mechanical Engineers has selected Research Professor Richard DeVor and co-authors Professor Shiv Kapoor and Andrew Honegger, an Illinois MSME alumnus to receive the 2008 Blackall Machine Tool and Gage Award. The best paper award was established in 1954 to recognize the best paper or papers related to the design or application of machine tools, gages or dimensional instruments.
May 7, 2008 - Professor Andrew AlleyneThe American Society of Mechanical Engineers selected Professor Andrew Alleyne to receive the 2008 Gustus L. Larson Memorial Award. The award honors engineering graduates who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in mechanical engineering within 10 to 20 years following graduation.
April 29, 2008 - Formula SAE team members take a pit stop.University of Illinois Formula SAE team members are celebrating a job well done after taking third place in the inaugural SAE VIR event. Fifty-three teams competed at the event, which took place April 23-26at the Virginia International Raceway.

April 9, 2008 - MechSE doctoral students Farhan Chowdhury and Majid Minary-Jolandan were among 20 graduate students selected by the College of Engineering to receive 2009 Mavis Memorial Fund Scholarship Awards of $5,000. The awards are given each year to promising students who are working toward their doctoral degrees in the College of Engineering.

He comes to MechSE from Northwestern University's McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, where he was an associate professor with joint appointments in the Department of Engineering Sciences & Applied Mathematics and the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
March 27, 2008 - Prof. JoDean MorrowEmeritus Professor JoDean Morrow died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, March 25, at his home in Ajo, Arizona. He was 78 years old.The retired TAM professor was known throughout the world for introducing the strain approach to fatigue and was widely recognized for his work in low-cycle fatigue and for his pioneering leadership in the development of useful design criteria for mechanical components subjected to fatigue damage.
