Professor Mark Shannon's testimony at a recent U.S. House of Representative's Energy and Environment Subcommittee hearing was featured in the July 24 issue of Energy & Environmental Daily, an online subscription publication that is widely read by members of government, environmental groups, corporations and the media.

Shannon was one of several witnesses at the hearing who testified in support of draft legislation that would coordinate and improve federal water research programs. Shannon, who directs the Center of Advanced Materials for the Purification of Water with Systems, said that population growth could lead the United States to increase its water consumption by 62 percent by 2040, but that better conservation methods could reduce that consumption increase to about 29 percent. He called the bill drafted by House Science and Technology Chairman Bart Gordon (D-Tenn.) that would ramp up water development, education and technology transfer "visionary" and recommended that federal research efforts focus on assessing waters in freshwater and saline and brackish water aquifers.
