The award is given annually to a person or team of people that performed an aerospace control engineering activity during the previous 36 months that demonstrates excellence and significant results with demonstrated impact. Honorees are judged on the originality of their technical innovation, significance or relevance to the aerospace community, and the potential impact on the practice of aerospace engineering.
She was also recently honored as a Fellow of IEEE.

Hovakimyan is a leader at the forefront of the field of robust adaptive control systems. She joined the MechSE Department in 2008, and is an affiliate faculty in the departments of Aerospace Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering, as well as a professor in the Coordinated Science Lab, Beckman Institute of Science and Technology, and the Information Trust Institute. She runs the Advanced Controls Research Laboratory at Illinois. She earned her PhD in physics and mathematics from the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1992.
