In a unique twist on engineering outreach, Professor Amy Wagoner Johnson and her research group particpated yesterday in creating a crochet coral reef for the Urbana-Champaign Satellite Reef, part of the worldwide Crochet Coral Reef Project created by Margaret and Christine Wertheim.
The project is related to a National Science Foundation grant Wagoner Johnson has been leading on coral reef recovery and propagation.
The local project is led by the School of Art and Design at Illinois, and is sponsored by the School of Art + Design Visitors Committee; the George A. Miller Visiting artist fund and Millercomm lecture series, sponsored by the Center for Advanced Study; the Frances P. Rohlen Visiting Artist Fund; the College of Fine and Applied Arts; Krannert Art Museum; the Siebel Center for Design; The Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology; Champaign School District Unit 4; and Stratton Academy of the Arts.
The workshop took place outside and socially distanced, and materials were provided to teach participants how to begin crocheting their own corals. Participants are encouraged to keep crocheting and making corals until the creations are set to be exhibited at The Seibel Center for Design in April 2021.
