Designing using harmonics

Dr. Bahl described harmonics and wave properties of metal cantilevers to the participants. The participants then used that knowledge to design a sensitive measuring device to determine the mass of small objects. Participants were able to design devices that were sensitive enough to tell precisely how many paper clips were in a cup. One participant reported “this was so cool, using something we had never even heard of before to make a very accurate scale. I never would have thought I could do something like this! Dr. Bahl made it so understandable.”

Dr. Bahl is briefed on the plan of one of the groups to determine the weight of the paper clips.
