ME 598-KT: Applied Optics and Subsurface Imaging

Class Description:

This course is intended to provide a practical understanding to optics and subsurface sensing and imaging for engineering and science students who are non-specialists. Students will be introduced to basic concepts in electromagnetic fields and waves as they pertain to measurement science and subsurface imaging. Related applications using wave-based probes, such as acoustic fields and waves, will also be presented. Topics covered will include reflection, absorption, elastic and inelastic scattering, localized imaging, time-of-flight ranging, tomographic imaging, and spectral imaging. Advanced background in electromagnetics is not required.
