ME 403: Internal Combustion Engines

Class Description:

Theory and analysis of reciprocation internal combustion engines, fuels, carburetion, combustion, exhaust emissions, detonation, fuel injection, and factors affecting performance; laboratory on variables that affect performance. Prerequisite: Credit or concurrent registration in ME 400 or ABE 466, or consent of instructor. 3 undergraduate hours or 3 or 4 graduate hours.

2. Ideal models of engine processes and cycles

3. Thermodynamic properties of engine working fluids

4. Combustion thermodynamics

5. Fuel/air cycle analysis

6. Spark-ignition engine combustion and emissions

7. Diesel engine combustion and emissions


1. Four homework assignments in topics 3, 4, 5, and 12 to develop a computer simulation of the spark-ignition engine cycle

2. Each student is required to write his own process subroutines in FORTRAN 77 and integrate them with a thermodynamic property routine package.

3. Each student is required to run the computer cycle simulation and compare the results against his laboratory data. A detailed discussion of the computer results is required in lab reports 1 and 2.


1. Effects of compression ratio on spark-ignition engine performance. Report required.

2. Effects of fuel-air ratio and spark-timing on spark-ignition engine performance. Report required.

3. Effects of ignition timing on diesel engine performance. Report required.
