Transfer from Institutions Outside UIUC
The MechSE Department encourages interested outstanding undergraduate students attending other institutions to apply for admission. Please contact the UIUC Office of Admissions after consult the Transfer Handbook on the UIUC Office of Admissions website:

Inter-College Transfer Criteria and Procedures
(for students currently attending UIUC, but are not currently in the UIUC College of Engineering)
The MechSE Department encourages interested outstanding undergraduate students, as measured by their high GPA, attending UIUC to petition to transfer into Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Mechanics majors. Prospective students who are not currently in the UIUC College of Engineering should follow the steps given in the following link:

Please note that students not currently in the UIUC College of Engineering must contact the College First. Only when approval from a Dean is obtained can the students contact the MechSE Department regarding their transfer. Once a transfer petition form signed by a Dean in 206 Engineering Hall is obtained students should follow the steps below in the order that they are given:
- Fill out and submit the petition to transfer to the MechSE Undergraduate Programs Office (154 MEB) by October 1st for October consideration and by March 1st for March consideration. Students should include with their petition a one page essay describing why they want to transfer into Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Mechanics. The petitions will be reviewed by the MechSE Department. The selected students will be recommended to the College of Engineering for transfer based on available space.
- The students will be notified of MechSE Department’s transfer decision via e-mail by October 15th (for October 1st submission) or March 15th (for March 1st submission). Students recommended for transfer will be asked to carry their petitions to 206 Engineering Hall to seek a Dean’s final approval.
Inter-Departmental Transfer Criteria and Procedures
(for students currently in the UIUC College of Engineering)
The MechSE Department encourages interested outstanding undergraduate students, as measured by their high GPA, attending UIUC to petition to transfer into Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Mechanics majors. Prospective students should have a minimum of two semesters at the UIUC campus with significant amounts of Math and Science courses taken, and outstanding grades. Students fulfilling these criteria should follow the steps below in the order that they are given:
- Go to 206 Engineering Hall and speak with a Dean about your intentions to transfer
- Obtain a petition to transfer from 206 Engineering Hall
- Fill out and submit the petition to transfer to the MechSE Undergraduate Programs Office (154 MEB) by October 1st for October consideration and by March 1st for March consideration. Students should include with their petition a one page essay describing why they want to transfer into Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Mechanics. The petitions will be reviewed by the MechSE Department. The selected students will be recommended to the College of Engineering for transfer based on available space.
