Time Limits to Attain Degrees:
A candidate for the Master's degree must complete all requirements for this degree within five calendar years after the first registration in the Graduate College. A candidate for the doctorate must complete all requirements for this degree within seven calendar years after the first registration in the Graduate College, except as noted hereafter. A candidate for the doctorate who has received a Master's degree elsewhere must complete all requirements for the degree within six years after the first registration in the Graduate College. This regulation also applies to the candidate who has received the Master's degree from the University of Illinois and whose studies were interrupted immediately thereafter, provided not more than the minimum number of units required for the Master's degree are applied to the doctorate.
Leaves from the Graduate Programs:
Many graduate programs have policies governing leaves. A student who has a need to interrupt his or her graduate program should make arrangements with the department and adviser prior to departure. Because of SEVIS regulations, policies concerning leaves for international students are different from policies for domestic students. International Students should always consult ISSS regarding specific regulations concerning leaves from Graduate Programs.
A domestic student who has not registered for any three consecutive terms (including summer) must submit a Graduate Student Petition requesting re-entry. A student holding educational loans should consult the lender before choosing not to enroll for a fall or spring semester.
You will need complete the graduate petition and the re-entry data form:
