Research Description

Professor Krier is working with Professor Nick Glumak to develop a comprehensive understanding of how to design and run shock tube experiments in order to produce unambiguous results. They have recently used the shock tube to study new materials for thermobaric explosives (which distribute energy over a much larger area than a single explosion) and to study the use of thermites (which have a high energy release, but don't release pollutants such as lead, arsenic or mercury). The majority of their Office of Naval Research-sponsored work focuses on the combustion of metals, which has important military and aerospace applications.
