Research Description

Professor Kapoor's research focuses on the modeling and analysis of machining processes and machine tool systems. His many significant contributions to manufacturing engineering research have helped to establish a scientific basis for machining processes and manufacturing process planning, among other areas. He is best known for his contributions to the development of mechanistic process models for machining processes that have been used for many years by many automobile and machine tool companies in process and product design, manufacturing execution and diagnostic work. He is widely recognized as one of the pioneers in the application of mechanistic models for monitoring, design, optimization, and control of machine tool systems. This work has been significant for achieving the goal of being agile in process operation with strong emphasis on the continuous improvement paradigm. His work on the mechanistic process modeling of machining processes has set a significant milestone in the cutting tool and machine tool design arena. Several major companies including General Motors, Ford and Caterpillar have now developed their own internal process modeling and simulation programs based on his work, and are applying them daily to the solution of machining problems in their plants. The process modeling-based software testbeds developed by his group and accessible over the Internet have had an international impact, being accessed by thousands of researchers and designers around the world.
