Last week we had the pleasure of hosting 19 students for the MERGE event.  It was such a pleasure to meet these students and learn about their research interests!  I know the students had busy itineraries meeting with faculty and current MechSE students.  It was especially cool to open up our new graduate student lounge and see our current students sharing advice with our prospective students!  Over the weekend I had the added pleasure of assisting with the GEM Grad Lab at the I-hotel.  We look forward to receiving applications from the students who visited!

MechSE, together with the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois, is committed to the principle that a diverse community enhances our living, learning, and working environment.  The Multi-Cultural Engineering Recruitment for Graduate Education (MERGE) and Support for Under-Represented Groups in Engineering (SURGE) programs are just a couple ways in which we enhance our department.  The MERGE program takes place each fall, and the SURGE fellowhip program takes place during spring semesters.  We look forward to nominating our eligible students and applicants for these awards this year!

Previous MechSE recipients of the SURGE fellowship include Sarah Mannen and Eduardo Torrealba.

You can read more about the MERGE and SURGE programs here.
