The YouTube channel “HowToLou,” run by MechSE alumnus Lou Wozniak, has recently hit 10 million views because of its helpful “how-to” videos and product reviews.
Wozniak earned his undergraduate degree in industrial engineering in 1989 and his master’s in mechanical engineering in 1991 from the University of Illinois. Currently, he works as a software engineer for AT&T, but has held onto his love for building things and working with his hands.
That love is now manifested in his YouTube videos. The channel began when Wozniak couldn’t find a satisfactory instructional video on building an outdoor fireplace. With some alternate research, he was able to build the fireplace and create a tutorial video to go along with it.
Wozniak expanded his reach, explaining processes like making an outdoor fountain or fixing a leaky faucet. He even started making videos that review products, with his most famous being a comparison of the automated vacuums, the Roomba and the Neato.
Priding himself on clarity and brevity, Wozniak takes an engineering approach to his explanations by being both logical and technical. The majority of his videos are under ten minutes in order to maximize efficiency and avoid wasting the viewer’s time.
With 250 videos, 22,000 subscribers, over 10M views, and an average of 8,000 views a day, “HowToLou” is making itself a household name on the internet. If you ever need to learn how to cook a trash can turkey, install a sprinkler system, or ride a flowboard, Wozniak’s channel is the place to go.
