c) Go to the basement

You take the key and the paper and hustle downstairs to the basement. Near the wind tunnel down the hallway you find an unmarked grey door. You try the key and it fits.

“Why can’t homework be this easy?” you wonder as you peer around the door. It’s dark, so you turn on the flashlight on your phone and see a steep narrow staircase whose end is swallowed by the darkness.  You try the doorknob from the inside to make sure you won’t lock yourself in, then close the door behind you and follow the stairs. The walls are made of old, crumbling red bricks and the stairs are damp concrete.

When you reach the bottom, you follow a narrow hallway to a second door marked “Steam Tunnel.” The door is dark wood with painted letters and has no lock, so you open it.  A small puff of warm steam hits your face as you step inside. The tunnel runs east to west and you choose to go west toward campus.

You follow your tunnel, occasionally finding branches where other tunnels connect. “This is so cool!” you think to yourself, attempting to take pictures. “ECHO!” you shout, but hear no reply.

You don’t take any of the connecting tunnels because you want to find out where this tunnel ends first. Eventually you find a small hallway tilted at an incline. You follow it to another wooden door. The door is locked but you are able to unlock the bolt from the inside.  You open the door and step into the basement of Noyes.

“I just walked steam tunnels!” you squeal excitedly. You sneak back out of Noyes feeling proud of yourself. Totally worth putting off studying for finals.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone!
